Automated Ship in Storm “Painting” Model
This model was built during my 10th semester of college (Spring 2020) for the final project in my Advanced Sculpture Class. The COVID-19 pandemic began right before this project started. As a result I was limited in space and recourses to make a more traditional sculpture. I adapted and designed and built a sculpture that resembles a painting. When the viewer presses a button the piece “Comes to Life” as the waves start moving, boat starts rocking, sky turns blue, moon glows and lighting effects combine to create a convincing vignette. The full show lasts about 45 seconds.
I wanted the piece to not obviously contain any of the effects described during normal viewing. I believe this adds mystery of the piece and leads the viewer to wonder what other magic the small box has in store. I did however chose to not fully hide the electronics and mechanics of the piece so after the initial show happens the viewer is able to marvel at the method of the magic they just witnessed.
I modeled the building in Autodesk Inventor and created the necessary 3D printable files. The model was then painted and programed via two Arduino Micro Controllers.
